Bodh Gaya (Bihar) — where the Buddha attained awakening — hosts winter Tibetan Buddhist courses (Tushita's Dharamsala and Bodh Gaya branches, Root Institute) and Theravada vipassana courses. Igatpuri (Maharashtra) is the headquarters of the global Goenka 10-day Vipassana network, with daily courses on a strict donation model. Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj are the seat of the Tibetan exile community and the Dalai Lama, with year-round teachings in English. For yoga, Rishikesh on the Ganges is the world's most concentrated ashram town, offering everything from 200-hour teacher trainings to traditional Hatha and Iyengar lineages; Mysuru (Karnataka) is the home of Ashtanga; Kerala combines yoga with Ayurvedic treatment. Cost is very low by Western standards — donation-based courses include food and lodging; paid yoga TTCs start around $1,000 for a month. October to March is the comfortable retreat season for most regions; monsoons (June–September) close many Himalayan centers.
