Thailand is the birthplace of the modern silent vipassana retreat as Westerners know it. Wat Suan Mokkh (Chaiya, southern Thailand) pioneered the 10-day International Dhamma Heritage course in English; Wat Pah Nanachat (Ubon Ratchathani) is the international branch of Ajahn Chah's forest tradition and accepts serious Western practitioners for long stays. Bangkok hosts urban Theravada vipassana at Wat Mahathat and Wat Bowonniwet, while Chiang Mai and surrounding mountains shelter dozens of forest monasteries and lay retreat centers, including international-facing options for first-timers. The southern islands — Koh Phangan especially — host yoga, breathwork, and combined wellness retreats year-round; Koh Phangan's scene is now comparable to Bali's in scale. Most Buddhist retreats run on a donation basis with simple shared accommodation and morning-only meals. English is widely available at international-facing centers; Thai food is vegetarian-friendly. The cool dry season (November–February) is ideal across most of the country; March–April is hot inland; the rainy season (June–October) varies regionally. Most Western passports get 30 or 60 days visa-free; longer education or retreat visas are available. Cost: silent monastic retreats run on donation; paid yoga weeks $600–$1,800.
