Norway's retreat scene is small but uniquely set against fjord, mountain, and Arctic landscapes. Yoga and silent retreats run in Western Norway's fjord country (Hardanger, Sognefjord), in Lofoten and Vesterålen, and in the southern coast around Kristiansand. The Insight (Vipassana) and Tibetan Buddhist sanghas hold periodic retreats at partner sites. Norway offers some of the most dramatic natural settings in Europe for contemplative practice, especially in summer (midnight sun) and winter (northern lights). Norwegian and English are both used. Vegetarian food is standard but cost of food is high. Best seasons run May–September outdoors; many centers run year-round indoors.
