Ethiopia's retreat scene is small and centered on Ethiopian Orthodox monasteries — Lalibela's rock-hewn churches and the Lake Tana monastery islands. These are working religious sites; respectful pilgrim-style visits are possible. Amharic and English are both used. Best seasons run October–March.
